LARRY A. WELBORN: The reason all of the attorneys at Standeffer & Harbin are in this line of work is because we really enjoy helping people who are unable to help themselves. We work hard in making sure that the insurance companies treat them fairly, that the government treats them fairly, that they get prompt medical attention, that they get everything that they're entitled to under the law because otherwise, without assistance, these people often get thrown to the side and really ignored by the system.
A lot of people ask the question of why do they need a lawyer. And the best reason I can explain to them is the other side in a worker's compensation claim is going to have a lawyer. Their employer is paying someone to represent their interest and to make sure their interests are protected. So without a lawyer to protect your interests, you're basically going in along against one or more lawyers. And it's awful difficult to get a successful resolution when you're handicapped that way.
By the same token, in a social security disability claim, although there's not a lawyer on the other side, often there's a vocational expert who will be asked hypothetical questions involving the claimant's ability to work. And without knowing how to respond to those questions or how to accurately address those, you run a real danger of getting unsuccessful resolution.
And unfortunately, once you have your day in court and it's unsuccessful, you can't then get a lawyer and go back and fix things.
